The feminicide of an indigenous girl, María Flor, aged 10

“ The feminicide of an indigenous girl, María Flor, aged 10, committed in July of 2012, is a paradigmatic case of the historical violation of Human Rights that is ongoing against indigenous marginalized girls in the state of Chiapas.
Low quality schooling, and monolingual illiteracy are correlated in the case of indigenous rural women with the ignorance and lack of knowledge about their Human rights, as has been denounced by “Grupo de Mujeres [Women´s Group] de San Cristóbal de las Casas (Colem) y el Centro de Derechos de la Mujer [Women´s Rights´ Center] de Chiapas (CDMCH)
“The fact that the Mexican government rarely punishes violence and discrimination committed against women, undoubtedly contributes to its perpetuation”, has been declared by both organizations.
According to the case´s research, Maria Flor was delivered by her sister to a trafficker known as Mariá N at the suburb of “Primero de Enero”, one of the poorest and more marginalized of the city San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas, México.
María Flor worked for a few days cleaning the house of María N, and then was told that she was to be taken to a new work place. The girl was taken in a truck by the driver of María N to a cantina-bar on the margins of San Cristóbal de Las Casas. There were waiting 8 men, that raped her and left her dying.
After the gang rape, the driver and a teenage girl, presumably linked to the traffickers, realized that María Flor was still breathing. Afraid to be denounced, both people asphyxiated and stabbed the girl, and then abandoned the body in a street at the municipality of Huixtán.
María Flor´s family denounced for kidnapping, and afterwards the “Indigenous affairs attorney office” detained the presumed killers. The rest of the accomplices in the crime are still without punishment. “
